What are essential oils?
Therapeutic Grade Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and fruit of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. If you have ever enjoyed the gift of a rose, a walk by a field of lavender, or the smell of freshly cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. In addition to giving plants their distinctive smells, therapeutic grade essential oils play a role in plant pollination and provide protection against predators and disease. Citrus plants such as lemons, limes, oranges, and tangerines, store their oil in the rind of the fruit and this is where the fruit gets its scent from.
Therapeutic Grade Essential oils are non-water-based phytochemical’s made up of volatile aromatic compounds. Although they are fat soluble, they do not include fatty lipids or acids found in vegetable and animal oils. Essential oils are very clean and are immediately absorbed by the skin. Even though therapeutic grade essential oils are natural and therefore assumed to be gentle, this is not always the case. They are highly potent and a couple of drops can go a long way. These oils are up to 75 times stronger than dried herbs, this gives you an idea of their efficiency and potency.
Therapeutic Grade Essential oils have been used throughout history in cultures across the world for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Modern scientific study and trends toward holistic approaches to wellness are driving a revival in the study of therapeutic grade essential oils and their numerous health benefits are being rediscovered.
Why are they important?
The importance of therapeutic grade essential oils dates back hundreds of years, throughout many cultures. In 3500 B.C., The Egyptians for example, had a sacred room in the Temple of Isis used for cleansing rituals with essential oils. Even the Bible has almost 200 references of essential oils throughout the text with mentions of spikenard, hyssop, rosemary, myrrh, and frankincense. The Book of Exodus has a recipe for a holy anointing oil, and in the New Testament, Three Wise Men gifted the Christ child frankincense and myrrh.
